As the story both in the show but also in the original series of books keeps unfolding we start getting more and more insight into the way GoT characters are really like. We kickstarted this series with a Daenerys Targaryen Character Analysis, and because of their relationship, we are continuing this article series with a Jon Snow Character Analysis.
This character has experienced a lot of growth and changes over the eight seasons of Game of Thrones, his personality traits, and actions representing a great source for inspiration.
Jon Snow
Jon Snow, even if he had a good position in the show from the beginning due to his affiliation to Ned Stark, his “bastard” status always hunted him. Although he was considered to be Ned’s son, because of his status, the young character joined the Night’s Watch early in the show.
He was named Lord Commander but, not for long because his watch later ended at once with his death, at the end of season five. After being brought back to life, Jon leaves the Night’s Watch to take back the North. After conquering the north with his sister Sansa, Jon is getting declared the King in the North even if he’s not a Stark.
Jon only later finds out that his real identity is Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. He is the rightful heir to the throne; a secret well kept by Ned Stark for Jon’s protection. Although Jon could use plenty of fancy titles to describe himself, unlike his female friend Daenerys Targaryen, Jon uses none.
Perspective and Loyalty
Jon’s journey is an impressive one illustrating in a brilliant manner what this character’s aim is, and showcasing his ability to see the bigger picture. Because of his bravery and special abilities, Jon first gets chosen as the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.
Later, even if considered to be only half Stark, Jon gets elected as the King in the North instead of his sister Sansa. Both of these times the character wasn’t pursuing a position of power and a title but, he was only trying to do the right thing.
Even when elected, Jon was ready to refuse the offer since the character was never aiming for something like this. Even as Aegon Targaryen, the rightful king, Jon is not aiming to rule the Seven Kingdoms. He is ready to turn down his identity, letting Daenerys take control, doing what he considers to be just.
Long Term Vision
Jon’s long-term perspective and ability to see the big picture, combined with an authentic loyalty for those around him, is allowing him to easily turn down big titles and do the right thing instead. His aim is not to be a ruler but to help to achieve the greater good for the kingdoms and ensure that the people around him are having a good life.
Being loyal to those around you and being willing to sacrifice some of your hedonistic pursuits for the greater good will allow you to build relationship easier and to live your life with clarity.
Conclusion
Jon Snow has accomplished and conquered many things so far but, thanks to his valuable traits. The hero was always able to serve the greater good and live a satisfying life, as showcased in this Jon Snow Character Analysis. Who knows, he might end up taking the throne by the end of the show, even if he doesn’t want it.
